Two primary schools in Konoin Sub-county of Bomet County have been declared ineligible to participate in the upcoming Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet elections scheduled for Saturday March 7, at Itembe Secondary School.

In a letter dated March 2, 2026, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu informed the KNUT Bomet Executive Secretary that Marinyin and Ketumbe Primary Schools will not take part in the Bomet polls.

According to the letter, the two schools are geographically located in Saosa Zone, Konoin Sub-county, but are reported to have been administratively hived off and domiciled in Kericho County.

The union noted that the schools had already exercised their democratic right by participating in the KNUT Kericho Branch General Elections held on January 10, 2026.

“For purposes of the forthcoming Branch General Elections scheduled for March 7, 2026, the said schools shall not be eligible to participate in KNUT Bomet Branch elections, having already exercised their democratic right in the KNUT Kericho Branch General Elections,” the letter stated.

The communication was in response to a petition dated January 27, 2026, from a section of teachers and KNUT members from the two schools seeking clarification on their jurisdiction.

Oyuu advised the Bomet Branch to facilitate and forward a properly executed petition in compliance with Article 37 of the Constitution of Kenya, which guarantees the right to assemble and present petitions to relevant authorities.

However, he assured members from the affected schools that they would continue to enjoy full union rights and participate in KNUT activities and programmes pending formal determination of their jurisdictional status.

The decision is expected to have an impact on the Bomet branch elections, where competition for key positions, including that of Executive Secretary, remains tight.
