Oyuu: Banning boarding schools is welcome, but do it in phases

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has lauded the decision by the Ministry of Education to ban boarding schools.

However, Oyuu urged the government to consider abolishing the schools in phases.

“The government should not abolish the boarding schools at once. They should come up with a way to do it since they can’t bring them down at once,” he added.

The KNUT boss urged the government to be accommodative of the existing schools so that there is no wastage of resources and to avoid burdening parents.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated that from January next year there will be no primary boarding schools except in semi-arid areas.

The initiative is intended to help parents bond with their children since most learners in boarding schools don’t spent much time with their parents.

He added that the decision was made to also make education affordable to every student since boarding schools are more expensive compared to the day schools.
