Kangundo MP has decried poor performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination by area students and blamed it on overstayed teachers.
The legislator observed that most local schools have teachers who have served in one station for more than five years even when they are not improving results. He called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to review its transfer policy and ensure that teachers are moved from one station to another after serving over a period of time as part of a re-engineering process.
Speaking at Kathithyamaa Secondary school in his constituency during presentation of a bursary cheque worth Ksh 1.28 million, Fabian Kyule expressed concern over the few number of students qualifying for University entry while majority score Grade E.
“This is a matter of grave concern and something ought to be done urgently,” he said.
Mr. Kyule said quality education was one of the most effective tools in the fight against deep rooted poverty in the region and called on parents to invest more in their children’s education.
“It is important for parents to remember that they have a huge role to play in supporting improvement of education standards,” said the legislator.
According to him, the constituency has over the years lost its former glory where it was an academic powerhouse.
