Over 9000 litres of illicit brew destroyed in Kisii

Matungulu DCC Evelyn Wekesa leads chiefs and other leaders in pouring down hundreds of litres of illicit brew nabbed in a past crackdown.

The police will continue to crack down on illicit brew. Kisii South Deputy County Commissioner Grace Ouma said that many youth in the area have dropped out of schools due to consumption of the alcohol and have opted to do menial jobs.

“We must fight this vice with all efforts before it has become a chronic plague among the residents, she said.

The Commissioner was addressing residents at Bomorenda village on Monday June 24 in Bonchari Constituency after leading a police to raid chang’aa dens the area.

She lauded the chiefs, their assistants and community policing groups for assisting in discovering the hideouts of the illicit brews which she said were hidden along river banks and in banana grooves.

My officers have done a commendable job by destroying over 9,000 of litres of kangara, chang’aa among others arrested some of the suspects who will be taken to court,” she said.

Elias Matara, a resident, said that most of the dropouts had started stealing farm produce to sell in order to buy illicit brew.

He appealed to the police to crack down kiosk owners who he said sell wines and spirits to school children.

He asked residents to join churches of their own choice and embrace health lifestyle that will lead to the longevity of their lives.

The residents resolved to work with other relevant authorities like NACADA to discourage the youth from the use of the beer and other illegal drugs.

Elizabeth Nyaboke, a community health worker, said that excessive use of beer affects one’s health because it causes them to loose appetite, have weak reasoning ability and habitual depression that leads to misunderstanding in many homes and may even results to deaths.
