Teachers across Kenya can now access treatment in more than 9,000 hospitals under the new medical cover managed by the Social Health Authority (SHA) following an agreement signed on November 10, 2025, at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.
The signing between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and all teachers’ unions, including KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET, transitions educators’ healthcare management from Minet to the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF) framework.
Acting TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr Evelyn Mitei said the expanded network of hospitals will transform healthcare access for teachers and their dependents.
“SHA will now give 9,016 hospitals across the country,” Dr Mitei said, referencing the Commission’s medical cover presentation. “These include public, private, and faith-based hospitals.”
The new SHA model is built on automation and digital innovation.
Teachers will now enjoy instant admissions, simplified claims, and real-time verification through biometric and one-time-password (OTP) systems.

“This process has been fully automated — no human interface,” she reaffirmed. “Teachers can now access healthcare without unnecessary delays.”
Dr Mitei emphasised that the fee-for-service model will ensure transparency and service delivery rather than policy restrictions.
“The proposed model will be a fee-for-service model,” she said. “It puts the teacher at the centre of medical care by linking payments directly to actual services rendered.”
The TSC presentation also outlined other key reforms, including improved supply of original quality drugs, better management of chronic conditions, and increased numbers of dental and optical providers.
