91 percent of classrooms to support Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) education in secondary schools have been completed in the Rift Valley region.
Rift Valley Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero said the government had completed 1,505 classrooms in the region as 231 are on the finishing phase.
“The government has done a very recommendable job by ensuring classrooms are constructed in14 counties of the Rift to give children and teachers a conducive environment to apply the curriculum in secondary schools,” said obiero.
The Rift Valley education boss said majority of the counties in the region had completed construction work.
He observed that Nandi and Bomet counties had attained 100 per cent completion as Kericho, Turkana, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia ,Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado and Samburu were at 90 percent. Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo are at roughly 82% and 81% respectively, the slow pace being blamed partially on security challenges posed by banditry.
Obiero said the government is committed to fully implementing the CBC in all 14 counties to ensure every child got their rightful share of education as highlighted in the Constitution and Education Act.
“We have done our part as government and we encourage teachers, students and parents to follow suit and ensure our children get quality education,” he reiterated.
At the same time, Obiero told parents to take all KCPE candidates to form one in line with the 100 percent transition policy.
Speaking to Education News in his office in Nakuru City, Obiero told parents to use their resources and those from sponsors to take their children to school. He also asked them to apply for bursaries from national and county governments.
“Parents should not have excuses because we have many avenues of getting funds to support children’s education,” said Obiero.
He added that one month after the completion of the form one admissions exercise, his office will coordinate with the office of the county Commissioners in the region to ensure every child is in school.
“We cannot waste millions of government money while few parents do not take their children’s education seriously. We will implement the government’s directive to transition 100% of KCPE candidates to form one,” he promised.
