Over 8,000 poor learners in Sigor get Ksh54M funding from NGCDF

Peter Lochakapong, Sigor MP.

Over 8,000 less privileged learners who were affected by insecurity in Sigor Constituency of West Pokot County have benefited from bursaries worth 54 million shillings courtesy of NGCDF.

This is good news as 60 per cent of children in the region are out of school because their parents are unable to pay fees, and some of them are orphans who lost their parents to conflict.

The insecure semi-arid area is faced with a lot of challenges of high poverty levels, hunger, dried up rivers, and general hardship.

Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong who launched the bursary at Chesta Girls Primary School said the move will help reduce banditry and cattle rustling.

“Children have no excuse not to learn. They will be busy in school,” he remarked.

He said they have stood up to the challenge to entice learners  by offering bursaries to orphans and school drop outs after many failed to report to school this term.

“Every child will get Ksh5000. Residents in this place are not used to paying fees. We want to help children to stay in school,” he said.

He asked the government to increase NGCDF allocation since the current funding is not enough to meet the demand.
