Over 71,000 teachers promoted in last five years, TSC CEO says

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia in KESSHA's Mombasa conference today. She has revealed that over 71,000 teachers were promoted in the last five years.

Over 71, 000 teachers were promoted to new grades in the last five years, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia has revealed.

Addressing the 47th annual Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference and Exhibition at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Macharia said that 36,504 teachers of the total were promoted in the 2023/2024 Financial Year alone.

She confirmed that a total of 545 deputy principals were promoted to principals in different schools across the country in the same period.

The TSC boss said a total of 3,445 new schools were established in the last five years, with this year’s alone having 160 new classrooms established in different parts of the country, saying they are looking to promote principals in these institutions as it is feared they have no substantive appointments.

She further stated that more teachers will be promoted next financial year starting July this year, urging principals, especially the old, even if they are remaining with one year in service, to apply when they are advertised since the commission has an elaborate policy on age.

Urging them to get ready for the first cohort of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at Grade 10, she assured that they will be confirming the Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers into Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms once they receive adequate funding from the National Treasury.

However, she didn’t disclose the exact number of those required, asking the 742 who were recently interdicted to appeal for review of their cases as each will be handled on its own merit.

Earlier this month, on June 10, 2024, the teacher employer dispatched termination letters to 742 JSS teachers on grounds that they absconded duty to take part in the JSS teachers’ strike, which lasted close to a month.

TSC said some of the teachers gave unsatisfactory reasons in their reply to the show-cause letters and some never bothered to explain themselves.
