Over 500 children forced out of school in Baringo due to insecurity

The education of over 500 learners in Baringo County is at stake after they fled their homes due to insecurity.

The children stay with their parents in makeshift camps in Kagir, Kosile, Chebon and Ngaratuko in Baringo South and Baringo North sub counties.

Saimo Soi MCA Moses Chebon said over 20 schools, including Kosile, Kagir and Ngaratuko remain closed, a situation he termed as worrying.

Addressing the press, he appealed for the creation of a special kitty to enable the learners, he says are suffering continue with their education.

“Over 20 schools remain closed and our children cannot attend school due to poverty resulting from insecurity. As a result, we ask the government to create a special bursary to enable children get education,” he said.

He also appealed for the urgent intervention of well-wishers, saying that the families are also in need of food and other necessities.

Concerning schools vandalised by bandits two month ago in the area, he observed that the schools have not been reconstructed, which he says has affected learning activities.

Chebon further asked both levels of government to facilitate the return of the families to their homes, saying they lost everything including their homes.

“Two months ago, bandits vandalised some schools here. The bandits also burnt books and destroyed the window panes. Unfortunately, the schools have not been reconstructed. We have a lot of officers but we don’t feel their work.  We also urged both levels of government to facilitate the return of families that fled their homes. These families lost everything including their homes,” added Chebon.
