The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) has kicked off a nationwide campaign to certify over 40,000 youth under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, aimed at formalizing informal skills and boosting employability.

The drive which is part of the NYOTA project is supported by the World Bank to improve job access, earnings, and financial inclusion among vulnerable youth.

Speaking during the project unveil, NITA’s Acting Director General Theresa Wasike said the rollout will begin with an awareness phase to ensure participants understand the process. This includes community forums and grassroots briefings to guide youth through screening and evidence collection.

He added that at centres like Maralal Vocational Training Centre, RPL practitioners are helping candidates compile proof of their skills ranging from photos and work samples to testimonials and videos. Once verified, candidates will undergo final assessments, which may be practical, written, or oral.

Project Coordinator Joseph Kinuthia confirmed that the programme is designed to recognise existing skills, not just formal education, and will help bridge gaps in technical training across the country.

NITA will also assess youth with internship experience and ensure training quality meets industry standards.

In addition, NITA plans to train 4,000 Master Craftsmen to improve instructional delivery and support the development of apprenticeship standards in emerging sectors such as digital, green, blue, grey, and creative economies.

Successful applicants will earn nationally recognised NITA certificates, validating their competencies for the job market.
