A total of 454 teachers have recovered from Covid-19 while 73 teachers have succumbed to the virus since the first case was reported in March 2020.
This was revealed during the launch of Teachers Service Commission’s survey findings for teacher preparedness for Term One 2021 school reopening at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) today, July 26, 2021.
It was also revealed that 44 percent of teachers have not received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia urged teachers who had not received any vaccination to do so. She also urged those who had taken the first dose to move with speed and get the second one.
A total of 158,678 teachers have received at least the first vaccination jab.
Dr. Macharia noted further that as schools reopen, teachers will be required to wear masks and wash hands regularly with soap and water or use sanitizers.
Dr. Macharia directed school heads to stick to the stipulated school fees and avoid loading parents with unnecessary levies.
“The TSC is investigating a few allegations that some teachers are not complying with government directives on fees. Action will be taken on those found guilty,” she said.
Dr. Macharia noted that the Commission will recruit a total of 8,914 teachers who will be deployed to various schools as from August this year to curb teacher shortages caused by the 100 percent transition policy.
On the roll out of the Competency Based Curriculum, Macharia said 90,000 teachers have so far been trained adding that the treasury has released Sh. 1 billion for further training.
