Thanks to the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, over 400 learners in Elgeyo Marakwet who had dropped out of school have resumed their education.

County MP Carolyne Ngelechei says the learners dropped out of school due to poverty and teen pregnancies, among others.

According to Ngelechei, education is a basic right that every child in the country should access regardless of their family or financial background.

“All these children had left school. I took all children from humble backgrounds who had stayed home for one or two years and had lost hope and enrolled them,” said Ngelechei.

During an empowerment programme in Chepyemit, she said many learners had lost hope after missing school for at least two years.

She noted that none of the needy students were discriminated against, further reaffirming her commitment to ensuring that all children in the county access education.

“Secondly, there are girls who have given birth at home. I took all girls who had children at home and missed the chance to continue with education. I did not discriminate against any of them. Anyone who came, I took them, and I got 400 children,” added Ngelechei.

MP Ngelechei encouraged the learners to work hard and concentrate on their education to better their future, promising to follow up on their performance.

The recent demographic survey placed Elgeyo Marakwet among the counties with the highest cases of teen pregnancies and marriages, with stakeholders being urged to collaborate to contain the trend.
