Over 18,000 students in Makueni County are set to benefit from the disbursed bursary cheque worth Ksh114.9 million by the county government in a move aimed at improving access to education and reducing dropout rates.
This was revealed by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for ICT, Education, and Internship, Japheth Mang’oka, at Green Park in Wote town, where he presided over the distribution of cheques on Monday.
“The bursaries will be distributed through the Ward Administrators in all the 30 wards across the county. We target 18,179 needy and deserving students to support their education. The initiative underscores the county government’s commitment to promote access to education for all,” said Mang’oka.
The cheque were given to the ward administrators who will distribute them to the beneficiaries at the grassroots level.

Bursary disbursement is part of Makueni County’s broader strategy to promote equity in education and uplift children from poor and vulnerable households.
Beyond bursaries, the county government is also planning to strengthen its scholarship program for high performing students from needy backgrounds. This will ensure that learners who excel in national exams have a chance to continue their education without interruption, all the way to university.
Many parents and guardians have welcomed the bursary disbursement, calling it a lifeline for their children’s education. For some students, the support has allowed them to return to school after dropping out due to fees. Others who were at risk of missing exams now have hope of completing their academic year.
