Residents of Rongai ward in Kajiado North constituency are calling on the government to act swiftly on the rising cases of drug and alcohol abuse in schools by teens.

Locals who attended a consultative forum in Ole Kasasi pointed out that drug abuse in the region has increased, with school-going children including those in primary schools now abusing drugs.

A local leader, David Nyakoiro, said a notorious illicit alcohol brewer has been selling alcohol to school children and the youth in Ole Kasasi and has been caught threatening local administrators.

Earlier, the woman’s premises were invaded by local administrators who destroyed some of the equipment she uses to ferry the alcohol.

Afterwards, she was seen hawking alcohol and it is suspected that she receives protection as she has been arraigned court before and released.

“One person has died so far from illicit brew. We want the DCC to ensure the woman is kicked out of this region,” Nyakoiro said.

Ole Kasasi Secondary school principal Johnson Gitau said every week they impound a number of students with drugs.

He decried the rising number of affected students and called on parents, the government and community to act before the situation worsens.

Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo said drug and alcohol abuse is a big challenge in the area and the community should work with government to stop its spread.

He added that parents should also enroll all their children to school since the government has provided bursaries.

Ongata Rongai OCS Mathew Masaga said police have intensified operations in the area, noting that they have recently arrested a 16-year-old boy with a fake gun.

Masaga noted that those drugs and alcohol peddlers are taken to court and prosecuted but later resume running the same illegal businesses.

Kajiado North DCC James Taari said that the government is working on eliminating alcohol and drug abuse in the country, noting that not all police officers are underperforming and the community should work with them to arrest culprits.
