Orphan on verge of despair offered full scholarship

As Form One students were joining their preferred secondary schools across the country, the story was different for Rassord Kipkorir from Kapkayo, Keiyo south.

Kipkorir’s  last resolve was to look for a herding job since no one was there to sponsor his education. But his fortunes turned when the community’s intervention attracted well-wishers.

Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Wesley Rotich offered to pay his school fees at Machakos Boys high School. The boy had scored 383 marks.

Taking to social media platforms, Rotich said he was touched by the boy’s predicament, saying the society could not afford to lose such brilliant minds due to lack of fees. He thanked the community for raising the matter.

While announcing his commitment, Rotich wrote: “When you light another person’s candle, yours won’t go off. Rassord Kipkorir from Kapkayo went to request for a herding job after scoring 383 marks. I will facilitate him join Machakos School.”

Rotich, who is gunning for the Elgeyo Marakwet gubernatorial seat, said his administration will increase bursary allocations and set up a kitty for needy children in the county.

On his part, Rassord thanked the DG for the gesture, promising to work hard and realize his dreams of becoming a lawyer.

Speaking to Education News, Symon Barsolai, a community mobiliser, said residents had to intervene to enable the boy go to school.

Thanking the DG for his gesture, Barsolai extended his appeal to other wellwishers to contribute to ensure Kipkorir pursued his education.
