OROKO: Schools need to establish systems to cater more for special learners

Special Needs Education (SNE) addresses the individual differences and requirements of learners with special needs.

It is against this background that an all-inclusive education system for learners with disabilities and special needs in regular classrooms is deemed valuable for everyone within the learning environment.

At the mention of special needs learners in school, one tends to think of those with impairments in specific aspects of learning, especially reading since learning disabilities account for about half of all special education needs.

Most people do not have in mind disabilities like speech and language disorders, intellectual disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), behavioral disorders, physical disabilities and sensory impairments since they are less common.

It’s important to note that learners with various disabilities need a learner friendly learning environment that benefits them both socially and academically.

If they are in class with learners without disabilities, both sets of students experience an enriching educational ecosystem blended with a wide range of learners and valuable educational purposes in operation in the classroom context.

When teachers have blended learners in a class, the most notable benefit they derive is an increased focus on diversity among the learners. Having learners with disabilities in a regular class environment reminds everyone that everyone is truly unique.

The support for people with disabilities and special educational needs has significantly grown   and its continuation will lead to a shift in political and social attitudes towards those with disabilities and their inclusion into activities that affect their daily lives.
