Open University of Kenya has admitted 2,100 students so far

Open University of Kenya.

Over 2,500 students have expressed interest in joining the Open University of Kenya (OUK) since its establishment in August 2023.

Out of the total applicants, 2,100 have met the qualifications and been admitted for various degree programmes.

OUK is a virtual University offering programmes online using the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) where students access high-quality interactive courseware at their own time and pace. However, a few synchronous lectures and tutorials can be offered at flexible time slots to students.

The University aims to address the pressing issue of limited capacity in traditional universities by employing innovative teaching and learning methodologies, including online and distance education.

By leveraging technology and flexible learning modes, the University seeks to accommodate a larger number of qualified students, enabling them to pursue higher education without the constraints of physical presence and limited campus capacities.

This initiative aligns with global trends in higher education that recognize the transformative potential of open and distance learning

The establishment of the institution seeks to increase access to university education and enable those who missed earlier opportunities or faced barriers such as formal grades, age, capacity to pay, gender, or geographical location to access education and training.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has accredited seven (7) flagship programmes, consisting of 5 undergraduate degrees and two postgraduate diploma programmes for offering in the current academic year.

The programmes are: Bachelor of Data Science, Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor of Technology Education, Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Economics and Statistics, Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability and Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.

Bachelor’s programmes take 4 years while postgraduate take 1 year.

The students are eligible for funding both from the Universities Fund (UF) and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

For admission to OUK, individuals have two pathways; through the KUCCPS admission portal via https://ouk.kuccps.net/ or the OUK admission portal via https://admissions.ouk.ac.ke/login/
