In a powerful story of hope and inclusion, Alex Kipkirui, a student from Borborwet Secondary School in Bomet County, has been awarded a full scholarship by the Open University of Kenya (OUK) after scoring a B plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, despite living with a disability and facing severe financial challenges.
This comes after the University officials visited Kipkirui’s home in Borborwet Village to formally present the scholarship, marking a life-changing moment for the young scholar and his family.
The delegation led by Open University of Kenya Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga, who personally handed over the admission letter and scholarship details congratulated Kipkirui for his resilient and ambition to achieve best in Education.
The comprehensive scholarship package includes full tuition coverage, a brand-new laptop and one year of internet data, ensuring that Kipkirui has all the tools needed to begin his academic journey.
Kipkirui will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a course chosen based on his interest and potential.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Omwenga said the university was committed to empowering students from disadvantaged backgrounds and ensuring that disability or poverty does not stand in the way of talent.
“We wanted Alex to do the programme of his choice. This scholarship is about restoring dignity, hope and opportunity,” Prof. Omwenga said, adding that the university will also support other academic requirements to ensure Alex succeeds.
A visibly emotional Alex Kipkirui said he had never imagined joining any institution of higher learning due to his physical condition and financial hardships.
“I had given up on the idea of university. I am very happy to receive this admission letter. This opportunity has changed my life,” he said.
Alex’s mother, Alice Langat, could not hide her joy as she thanked the University for believing in her son.
“As a parent, this is the happiest day of my life. I had no means to educate him further. I am grateful beyond words,” she said.
The scholarship has been widely praised as a shining example of inclusive education and social responsibility, offering renewed hope to many students living with disabilities across the country.
