Only two candidates were involved in examination malpractice in the KCPE examination conducted between October 30 and November 1, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has said.
“One was found with unauthorized notes and another with a mobile phone,” the CS said.
He added that the 2023 KCPE and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) were the best administered in a long time.
Speaking during the release of the KCPE 2023, he said 9,000 candidates who did not sit the examination will be given another chance in January 2024 after the ministry conducting a thorough mapping.

A total of 1,406,557 candidates sat the examination, the top candidate scoring 428 marks, even as 8,525 scored between 400 and 500 marks, 352,782 between 300 and 399, and 658,278 from 200 to 299.
Those who scored between 100 to 199 marks were 383,025, while 2,060 scored between 001 to 099 marks.
This year’s KCPE cohort was the last and has paved way for the full implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in primary school, which will now see KPSEA replacing KCPE.
All learners who sat the examination will join Form 1 next year, the placement process beginning on Monday November 27, 2023, and concluding within a period of two weeks.
