National Association of Private Universities (NAPU) has recommended that only deserving students in higher institutions of learning should be funded.

Led by Secretary General Dr. Vincent Gichuru Gaitho who doubles as the Mount Kenya University’s Council Vice Chairman, the union presented their proposals to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

He said that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) does not put into consideration the amount of money the Universities Funding Board (UFB) has when allocating funds to students.

“KUCCPS must liaise with UFB to determine the budget available and differentiate unit cost. When we fund everybody, it shall not be sustainable,” he said.

UFB’s main function is to advise the Cabinet Secretary on matters of university education funding and related policy issues.

They also, with consultation with the CS, develop transparent and fair criteria for allocation of funds to universities in accordance with established criteria.

UFB also mobilizes and receives funds for the Government, donors and other sources.

The 42-member Presidential Working Party was commissioned by President Ruto to assess the education sector in the country and recommend reforms regarding the CBC and the sector at large.

The public are invited to give their views and recommendations on the education reforms by attending the physical meetings or sending their recommendations to the taskforce via email to secretariat@educationreforms.go.ke up to November 18, 2022.
