Onjiko High School football team cleared as three-year ban lifted

Onjiko High School football team has been cleared to return to school games competitions after the Sports Disputes Tribunal lifted a three-year ban imposed by the Kisumu Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA).

The ban, issued in June 2025, followed allegations that the school fielded ineligible players during the secondary school games.

The decision to rescind the suspension came after the parties reached a consent at the Tribunal, where parent Fredrick Otieno Okiri had moved to challenge the disciplinary action.

According to the Tribunal, the resolution demonstrated the effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution under Section 59 of the Sports Act.

A joint press statement revealed that the Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association, the County Director of Education, and representatives from Lugano and Achura Advocates engaged in constructive dialogue that paved the way for the settlement.

This outcome now allows Onjiko High School to fully participate in future competitions organized by the Ministry of Education.

The school has since pledged to comply with all KSSSA rules in subsequent tournaments, particularly on player eligibility.

The Tribunal further noted that the matter serves as a precedent on how disputes in school sports can be resolved amicably to protect the interests of young athletes and the wider sporting community.
