Ongoing heavy rains destroy schoo
By Enock Okong’o
The ongoing heavy rains in Kisii County continue wreaking havoc – rivers have flooded, bridges have been dismantled and roofs ripped off.
Just recently, Mabundu Primary School in Nyaribari Chache Constituency was destroyed by the heavy rains.
According to the area Chief Mr. David Ondande, the night downpours catalysed by wind ripped off the grade five class room.
“The iron sheets were ripped off and scattered about 500 metres away from the school. Affected pupils might be forced to read under trees unless the situation is rectified,” reported the Chief.
He thanked God that the incident took place at night whIle pupils were at their homes.
The chief appealed to the area MP Richard Tong’i to mobilize the county’s NG-CDF to provide emergency funds for the reconstruction of the classroom.
Kisii County Weather forecasting Officer Mr Henry Sese said that the rain will continue for some time until mid July.
He warned parents to keep their children close because they are at a higher risk being drowned by the flooding rivers.
The officer also reminded the residents to make use of the rain by installing water tanks to store the excess water for use during the dry season.
