Ann Wanjiku Waigwa, a police officer who returned a bag containing Ksh 2 million in cash belonging to a British tourist at Wilson airport has bagged a full scholarship at the International Leadership University.

According to the university’s administration, due to her honesty the officer will be able to further her studies. They praised her for standing out amongst thousands of security personnel whose level of trust has frequently been called to question if not hit an all-time low.

“This year we have recognized a policewoman because to many Kenyans, the  police are not to be trusted and we want to encourage those people out of that perspective,” the Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr. Tim Kiruhi said.

The university management affirmed that awarding Waigwa with the scholarship would serve as an example to other officers to become people of integrity.

“She therefore deserves an award that is exemplary, transformative and will leave her with lots of joy in her heart,” the VC said.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony with more than 50 graduands, Dr. Isaac Kalua said; “Our emphasis is to develop leaders of integrity, leaders who will experience transformation in themselves and then step out to transform the community.”

At the ceremony, speaker after speaker emphasized the need to develop leaders of high morals.

Waigwa won Kenyans’ hearts after she returned a tourist’s bag with over Ksh 2 million inside during her work shift.

The tourist, who was on vacation in the country from the United Kingdom, lost the bag after his trip to the Maasai Mara.

When Waigwa found the bag, she informed the tourist – who had already left – that she was in possession of his lost items.
