Officer decries inadequate allocation of funds to adult schools

Inadequate allocation of funds has hampered operations in adult literacy centres in Malindi sub county, area Adult Education Officer Mr. Moses Uledi Mbaruku has said.

Speaking to Education News in his office in Malindi town recently, Mbaruku lamented that many literacy centres in the area have not been monitored for months and called on the government to allocate more funds towards the same to enhance quality teaching and enable efficient supervision and monitoring.

“The Sub County Adult Education Office is also currently facing several challenges such as teacher shortage and inadequate infrastructure. We need at least 100 teachers to offset the deficit,” he added.

He disclosed that there are only 6 full time adult education teachers in the sub county while the enrolment of adult learners currently stands at 5,000.

“Another challenge is that there are no adequate classrooms forcing us to teach in Mosques, under trees and dusty floors,” he said.

Mr. Mbaruku revealed that 88 adult education learners have been registered to sit for this year’s national examinations with 48 sitting for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and 40 sitting for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

He urged youth in the area, who dropped out of school, to enrol themselves in the literacy centres.
