Offer courses in the Blue Economy sector, PS urges TVET institutions

Principal Secretary Shipping and Maritime Affairs Shadrack Mwadime has urged TVET  institutions in Taita Taveta county to offer courses in the Blue Economy sector which has wide opportunities for the youth ranging from cruise, tourism and hospitality and marine security.

Speaking to Dembwa boda boda self-help group members in Mwatate sub county, Mwadime encouraged the youth to explore available opportunities in the Blue Economy sector.

Taita Taveta County Governor Andrew Mwadime urged the youth to take up courses being offered under Go-blue sector in TVET colleges so as to equip themselves with knowledge and skills vital in the exploitation of the blue economy.

He revealed that the county has a programme which is co-funded by the Government of Kenya, German Corporation, Europe Union, Go-Blue, Jumuia ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) and Kapyei.

The programme aims to equip the learners with skills in vessel repair, marine security, tourism and hospitality among other skills vital for maritime businesses.

The county has also partnered with GIZ-Agriculture Programme to introduce aquaculture curriculum at the Njoro VTC as part of its efforts to boost and sustain fish farming in the county.

“We seek enhanced collaborations to strengthen our beach management units, which will in turn help create a conducive and reliable sector that will offer alternative sources of livelihood to residents,” said the Governor.

The governor reiterated that Taita Taveta is the major producer of freshwater tilapia in the Coastal region and lauded GIZ for the development of fish nurseries in the county.

Fisheries CECM Erickson Kyongo lauded the strengthened collaboration between the county government and development partners noting that the move will promote fisheries in the county and in turn, boost the livelihood of the youth through creation of employment.
