The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kisumu City Branch witnessed a dramatic shake-up in its leadership over the weekend, with nearly the entire executive voted out by members during elections held at Nyamasaria Comprehensive School.
Branch Executive Secretary David Obuon was among the few who survived the wave, retaining his seat after garnering 1,042 votes against challenger Jeckoniah Owino, who secured 862 votes in a closely contested race.
The biggest casualty was long-serving chairman Elly Otieno, who lost his position to Evans Dolla, a teacher at Kondele. Dolla clinched victory with 1,273 votes, while Otieno managed 603. In another tight contest, Peter Otieno edged out David Onege to become Vice Chairman, securing 977 votes against Onege’s 905.

The post of Assistant Executive Secretary went to Anthony Ndalo, who polled 1,024 votes against Evans Ong’wen’s 890. The Treasurer’s seat was won by Fredrick Yamo with 673 votes, narrowly beating Victor Ndolo (635) and Elizabeth Sika (602).
For the position of Assistant Treasurer, Kennedy Wasingo sailed through unopposed. Meanwhile, Janet Achieng emerged victorious as Woman Representative with 1,282 votes, defeating Grace Awuor who garnered 736. The slot for Person with Disability was taken by Lornah Ayako, who secured 1,091 votes against Erick Otieno’s 803.
In his acceptance speech, Obuon pledged to continue championing the rights of teachers within the union. He vowed to resist arbitrary transfers and intimidation, stressing that the union must remain steadfast in protecting its members.
