Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has urged the government to immediately confirm junior secondary school (JSS) teachers instead of renewing their internship contracts, saying the move is unfair and demoralising to educators.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi, Nyoro criticised the directive compelling JSS interns to sign fresh one‑year agreements, despite expectations that they would be absorbed into permanent positions.
“An already disappointed Kenyan is now being cornered again to sign an internship for one more year,” Nyoro said as quoted by The Standard, insisting that the government should cancel the renewal plan and regularise the teachers’ employment. He argued that continued reliance on short‑term contracts undermines the stability of the teaching workforce and erodes confidence in education reforms.

Nyoro also accused the government of plotting to raise school fees for day scholars by Ksh 9,374 in 2026, claiming the proposal has already been factored into the Ministry of Education’s fee structure for the year. He warned that such a move would overburden parents who are already struggling with the rising cost of living.
“We are not going to allow the gains of free primary education to be humiliated by a government that has an appetite for money,” he declared, adding that the proposed increase would erode progress made in expanding access to education.
Nyoro maintained that both the treatment of JSS teachers and the looming fee hike reflect misplaced priorities by the government, urging the government to protect teachers’ welfare and protect parents from additional financial strain.
