Nyeri County Woman Representative, Rahab Mukami, has reaffirmed her commitment to education by disbursing bursaries worth Ksh. 5.2 million to needy learners across the county.
The funds, drawn from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), will benefit children from vulnerable families, orphans, and learners living with disabilities.
Speaking during the event, Mukami emphasized that education remains the strongest tool in breaking the cycle of poverty. She encouraged the beneficiaries to remain focused and determined despite the challenges they face.
“My commitment remains firm to stand with every child who dares to dream, despite their circumstances. Education is the key to transforming lives, and their future is worth investing in,” she said.
Through NGAAF, Nyeri County receives an annual allocation of Ksh6 million to support bursaries, scholarships, and other empowerment programmes. In addition to the bursaries, Mukami also distributed sanitary towels to school-going girls to promote menstrual health and reduce absenteeism. She further donated wheelchairs to support persons with disabilities.

The legislator urged the government to ensure timely disbursement of capitation funds to schools, noting that delays have put school heads in a difficult position, especially in feeding programs and meeting the needs of learners in hardship areas. She acknowledged that while the government has made strides in addressing capitation challenges, consistency and timeliness are key to ensuring smooth school operations.
Mukami also addressed concerns over the relocation of matatus to Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima Bus Stage dubbed as Shakahola, cautioning that the move is disrupting transport for learners and affecting businesses in Nyeri town. She called for dialogue between transport sector leaders and Governor Mutahi Kahiga to find an amicable solution that safeguards the interests of both students and traders.
The bursary disbursement comes as schools reopen for the new academic term. Mukami assured parents and guardians that her office will continue to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable children to guarantee equal access to education.
“As leaders and as a community, we must stand together to ensure no child is left behind. When we invest in education, we invest in the future of Nyeri and in the prosperity of our nation,” she concluded.
