Teachers in Nyeri County are undergoing an intensive digital empowerment program aimed at equipping them with modern technological skills to enhance teaching and learning in Junior Secondary Schools.

The training, currently underway at Duncan Ndegwa Secondary School, has brought together JSS teachers from Nyeri Central and Tetu Sub-counties. It is part of a wider initiative spearheaded by SCINOV Africa, a regional organization dedicated to advancing digital literacy and innovation in education.

Speaking during the sessions, Dr. Joshua Ndung’u Gikonyo, the Director of SCINOV Africa, said the program is designed to strengthen teachers’ capacity to integrate digital tools into everyday classroom activities. He stressed that the ability to use technology effectively is becoming an essential competency for educators, especially as schools continue to adopt new digital platforms and teaching methods.

Dr. Gikonyo expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by the participants, describing their level of engagement as “outstanding.” According to him, teachers have not only embraced the training content but are also exploring practical strategies to apply the tools in ways that can transform learning experiences for their students.

“The enthusiasm we are seeing demonstrates a real desire among teachers to innovate and make learning more interactive,” he said. “This program gives them hands-on exposure to digital resources that can boost learner engagement and support more effective delivery of the curriculum.” He said

During the sessions, teachers were introduced to a range of digital tools, including interactive learning platforms, content creation applications, and data management systems. Facilitators guide them through real-world scenarios, allowing them to test various applications that can be adapted to suit different subjects and teaching environments.

Participants said the training comes at a crucial time, as schools across the country increasingly shift toward blended learning and digital assessment tools. Many noted that the skills gained will help them stay aligned with national education reforms, which emphasize technology integration in Junior Secondary School instruction.

Organizers of the program hope that the initiative will create a ripple effect across the county, inspiring more schools to invest in technology-based learning and encouraging teachers to collaborate in developing innovative teaching practices.

As the training continues, SCINOV Africa has pledged to offer ongoing support to ensure that teachers can implement what they have learned in their classrooms. The organization plans to roll out similar programs in other counties as part of its mission to build a digitally empowered teaching workforce across the region.
