In a bid to nurture future leaders and instil civic awareness among young learners, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga on Tuesday, May 20, hosted a group of pupils from Chania Comprehensive School  from Nyeri Town Constituency and Huhoini Comprehensive School from Tetu Constituency for a day-long educational tour in Nairobi.

The initiative aimed to expose the students to national institutions and inspire them to pursue their goals with determination.

The day started with a visit to the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, where the pupils were introduced to Kenya’s rich wildlife heritage.

Guided by conservationists, they learned about wildlife’s critical role in maintaining ecological balance and the need for sustainable environmental practices. The visit served as both an educational and eye-opening experience for the learners, many of whom were visiting the capital for the first time.

Following the morning excursion, the students and their teachers were welcomed to lunch at Senator Wamatinga’s residence in Karen. The lunch provided an informal setting for interaction and mentorship.

During a motivational session, the Senator and the accompanying educators encouraged the learners to stay focused on their academic and personal goals despite any challenges they may face.

The Senator emphasised the power of education, quoting Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.

He added that the visit was meant to inspire the pupils and give them a glimpse of the broader opportunities that lie ahead if they remain disciplined and goal-oriented.

“I was greatly inspired by the confidence and brilliance of these young minds,” said Senator Wamatinga. “It is our responsibility to nurture them and ensure they have access to experiences that broaden their horizons.”

In the afternoon, the pupils visited the Senate and attended a live parliamentary session. They observed lawmakers in action and learned about the legislative process, the structure of government, and the role of parliament in shaping national policy. Senate staff facilitated the visit and provided an interactive briefing tailored to the students’ level of understanding.

Teachers from both schools lauded the initiative, noting that such real-world exposure significantly enhances classroom learning.

“This experience will stay with our students for a long time,” said one teacher.

“They have learned about the environment and government and received mentorship that could shape their future paths.”

The day concluded with the pupils expressing their gratitude and enthusiasm, with many describing the outing as both eye-opening and inspiring. The Senator promised to continue supporting educational initiatives and urged other leaders to invest in youth empowerment.

This initiative stands as a testament to the power of experiential learning and the importance of connecting young people with the institutions that govern their country and the resources that sustain it.
