Nyeri National Poly to construct hospitality complex

By Asa Maina

Nyeri National Polytechnic is planning to start a hospitality complex similar to those of leading institutions in the country such as Kenya Utalii College and Kenya School of Monetary Studies.
The facility will enable students get practical experience as well as earn income for the polytechnic. This was announced by the Chairman of the Polytechnic Council Richard Gikuhi recently.
Gikuhi was speaking during the launch of standards laboratory equipment worth Sh 127 million by the Permanent Secretary department of Vocational and Technical Training Dr Kevit Desai.
The institution has grown in population in the last three years since it was upgraded from a Technical Training Institute to a National Polytechnic with the number of students shooting from 1,000 to 4,000.
The growth has come with a share of challenges some of which are being addressed by the Government such as the provision of equipment.
The institution also needs a modern students’ centre whose cost is estimated at Sh 300 million.
Gikuhi said due to the growth of the students’ population, most of them have been staying outside the institution’s compound.
The hostels also need to be rehabilitated as some had leaking roofs.
