Nyeri Governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down as the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following public backlash over remarks he made in a vernacular clip that circulated widely on social media.
In a statement dated October 22, 2025, Kahiga apologized to the family of the late Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, the ODM fraternity, the Luo community, and Kenyans at large for the comments made during a burial ceremony in his home village.
The governor clarified that his statements were taken out of context, explaining that he had expressed sorrow over Kenya’s loss of the veteran opposition leader and meant no harm. He said the comments were his personal views, not reflective of any political position or the stance of the Council of Governors.

“My remarks were in no way celebratory. What I meant is that the loss of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister sends everyone back to the drawing board,” Kahiga stated.
Acknowledging the public outrage and political reactions sparked by the viral clip, Kahiga said he was taking full responsibility for the “real and perceived meaning” of his words. Consequently, he announced his decision to resign immediately as CoG Vice Chair.
He concluded his statement by conveying condolences to the Odinga family, praying for the late former Prime Minister’s eternal peace.
“May the soul of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga continue resting in eternal peace. God bless Kenya,” he said.
