Prof Peter Wanderi MKU Principal Corporate Communications and Alumni Relations awards a full scholarship to environmentalist Truphena Muthoni at the university in Thika
Prof. Peter Wanderi, Principal for Corporate Communications and Alumni Relations at Mount Kenya University, presents a full scholarship to environmentalist Truphena Muthoni at the university’s Thika campus.

Environmentalist Truphena Muthoni has every reason to celebrate after being awarded a full scholarship by Mount Kenya University (MKU) to pursue her studies from January next year.

The 22-year-old is an environmentalist & climate advocate who raises awareness on climate change, tree planting, forest conservation, and community engagement for sustainable environmental practices.

Prof Peter Wanderi, the university’s Principal, Corporate Communications and Alumni Relations, said that the University, through the MKU Foundation, awarded her a full scholarship to study environmental studies or related fields in recognition of her dedication to environmental conservation and advocacy for the United Nations’ 17 SDGs.

Prof Wanderi spoke at the institution in Thika, where he had hoisted Muthoni.  He quipped that the scholarship will empower her to continue inspiring youth to take active roles in protecting and conserving the environment.

“In line with MKU’s mission-To provide world-class education, research, and innovation for global transformation and sustainable development- the scholarship supports young people who go above and beyond in their endeavours. Muthoni embodies this spirit of dedication, innovation, and leadership,” Prof Wanderi said.

This recognition comes after Muthoni’s extraordinary act of environmental advocacy—embracing a tree continuously for 72 hours—a symbolic gesture that highlights her unwavering commitment to climate change mitigation. Her initiative aligns closely with President William Ruto’s national campaign to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, a cornerstone of Kenya’s climate resilience strategy.

“Once she registers for the course that she will pursue, the university will take full financial responsibility for her studies,” Prof Wanderi noted.

The don praised Muthoni as a good example of love and care for the environment, urging Kenyans of all ages to emulate her and take the initiative to address climate change.

“The scholarship will enable her to further her environmental advocacy through education, research, and practical impact. We wish her every success as she embarks on this exciting academic journey,” Prof Wanderi said.

On her part, Muthoni said she has learnt a lot from both people and nature, noting that it is now time to gain formal knowledge through education to strengthen her advocacy and find solutions to the challenges facing Kenya and Africa as a whole.

She expressed deep gratitude to Mount Kenya University for the scholarship, describing it as a potent reminder that young people who pursue their purpose can have their efforts recognised, valued, and supported.

“I am sincerely thankful to Mount Kenya University and the MKU Foundation for the scholarship support. I am truly honoured that my environmental initiative has been recognised. This opportunity motivates me to grow through education and create a positive impact,” she said.

Muthoni, who has planted over 11,000 trees, stated that environmental degradation is often driven by ignorance, emphasising the need for widespread awareness and understanding of conservation efforts.

She added that if everyone takes personal responsibility and lives sustainably, a greater impact can be achieved, especially when the public is well informed about environmental conservation.

President William Ruto praised her dedication to conservation following her tree-hugging challenge.

He appointed her as an ambassador for the national 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, conferred the Head of State Commendation (HSC) medal on her, and arranged a sponsored holiday for her team through wildlife and tourism bodies.

He further pledged the Environment Ministry’s support for her trip to Brazil to engage with global initiatives. During the visit, Muthoni planted a tree on the grounds.
