Nyanza Youth Development launches scholarship programme to boost skill among youth

The Department of Youth Development in Nyanza has launched a scholarship initiative targeting young people who could not pursue higher education due to one reason or the other to gain skills for self-development.

The scheme under the tutelage of Vitalis Ochieng Okoth with generous support from Dr. Raymond Omolo, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, is breathing life into dreams that once seemed lost.

The initiative will see dozens of young men and women enroll at Bumbe Technical Training Institute in Busia County, where they will pursue practical skills in fields ranging from mechanics to ICT, hospitality to agribusiness. It’s more than education, it’s a lifeline.

Among the beneficiaries is Hilary Omondi, who sat his KCSE in 2022 but couldn’t proceed due to financial constraints. “I thought my future had ended,” he says. “Now, I feel like I’ve been given a second chance.” Another is Susan Obunga, a 2018 candidate whose resilience never waned despite years of waiting. “This opportunity is a miracle,” she shares, eyes gleaming with renewed hope.

The program doesn’t just aim to educate, it seeks to transform. By equipping youth with technical skills, it empowers them to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of Nyanza, breaking cycles of poverty and dependency.

“This is about restoring dignity,” says Director Okoth. “We are not just funding education; we are investing in the future of our region.”

As buses prepare to ferry the students to Busia, one thing is clear: the road ahead is no longer paved with despair, but with possibility. And for the youth of Nyanza, the journey has just begun.

For many young people in Nyanza, the journey after high school has been one of heartbreak and halted dreams. Between 2018 and 2025, hundreds of Form Four graduates watched their aspirations fade, not because they lacked ambition, but because they lacked the means. University and college doors remained shut, sealed by the heavy burden of financial hardship.
