Nyanza region releases 2026 secondary school sports calendar

The Nyanza Regional Director of Education, Allan Omondi, has officially released the 2026 calendar for secondary school sports activities.

In a notice dated January 15, 2026, Omondi outlined a packed schedule of events set to run throughout the year under the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA).

According to the calendar, Term One activities will begin with the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association (NRSSSA) clinic, scheduled for 29–31 January 2026. By 28 February 2026, sub-county finals for hockey, basketball, rugby 15s, handball, and athletics will have been concluded. County finals for these disciplines are set to take place by March 6,2026.

A regional swimming gala will be held on March 14 2026. The director noted that all participants must submit the required documents before the gala, with secretaries’ meetings and document submission taking place on the same day.

Regional sports competitions for Term One will be staged at Kisumu School from March 17 to 21. National championships for the same sports will follow from April 5 to 13, also in Kisumu.

For Term Two ball games, including soccer, volleyball, netball, rugby 7s, racquet games, and 3×3 basketball, sub-county competitions are expected to be completed by June 7. County-level games will be concluded by June, 20 2026.

A secretaries’ meeting and submission of documents for Term Two will be held on June 22 at Homa Bay National School. Regional games for these disciplines will then take place from 7 to July 11 at the same venue.

National championships for Term Two games are scheduled for  July 26 to August 2, 2026 in the Kiambu Central Region. At the regional level, the East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games will be held from August 12 to 23 in Tanzania.

The director further emphasized adherence to age regulations, stating that only students born on or after 1 September 2006 will be eligible to participate in KSSSA activities. He also reminded schools that all participants must be uploaded onto the KSSSA portal before taking part in any competition.

The release of the calendar is expected to help schools plan adequately for training, documentation, and participation in the 2026 secondary school sports season.
