Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has received a major boost in his re-election bid after the Nyanza Region Council declared unanimous support for his leadership and the entire national steering team.
The endorsement was made during a strategy meeting held at Grand Forty Hotel in Kisumu, where delegates resolved to stand firmly behind Oyuu and his team. “Collins Oyuu and the entire KNUT steering is our preferred choice,” the council announced, adding that the region was resolute and united in its decision.
Speaking after the meeting, Oyuu vowed to defeat his opponents “hands down,” citing his track record as justification for a fresh mandate. He reminded members that when he took over the union, KNUT’s membership had dwindled to just 9,000. “As we speak, the current KNUT membership stands at 180,000, with all branches across the country up and running,” he said.
Oyuu highlighted his role in negotiating several collective bargaining agreements that have benefited teachers, and warned that only registered KNUT members in good standing will be allowed to participate in next month’s elections. He urged delegates to uphold integrity during the polls, which will be held in Kisumu.
