Nyamira Woman MP calls for tree planting in schools to mitigate climate change

Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusah Momanyi has called on school heads in the region to instill an afforestation culture among their learners and staff.

Momanyi said that planting trees was the surest way to counter the negative effects of climate change being felt globally, and instilling the culture in young learners would go a long way in mitigating the crisis.

She added that planting trees would add to the beauty of their compounds, produce fruits and provide shade during hot weather.

Momanyi was speaking at Riomanga Primary School where she led staff and pupils to plant 250 trees and donated uniforms and First Aid equipment to the Scouts and Girl Guide clubs.

She asked the pupils to be good emissaries of tree-planting in their homes by encouraging their parents and family members to plant trees, especially indigenous ones as they are more environment-friendly compared to exotic ones.

The Woman Rep observed that climate change was a sad impending reality and asked the Ministry of Education to introduce environmental studies as a compulsory subject from primary through to the university level.

Momanyi advised residents to avoid planting eucalyptus trees near rivers and instead replace them with bamboo trees which do not consume a lot of water.
