Nyamira parents with crude weapons frogmarch Principal, teachers over poor KCSE results

Nyamira County KUPPET Executive Secretary Lewis Nyakweba.

Irate parents armed with crude weapons have invaded Mwamogusii Secondary School in Nyamira County and ejected the Principal from the school compound over poor 2023 KCSE results.

The parents reportedly forced themselves into the school and forced the Principal and teachers to kneel. They later frog-marched them as they jeered in a spectacle of utmost humiliation.

Following the incident, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nyamira branch Executive Secretary Lewis Nyakweba has called for urgent intervention from Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and his Interior counterpart Kithure Kindiki, saying that cases of teacher harassment were getting out of hand.

“This is serious and we will not sit back and watch our colleagues being harassed by parents,” he said.

Speaking to Education News, Nyakweba said that his office has instructed the affected teachers not to report at the station until the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) assures them of their security by transferring them to other stations.

Asked on the possibility of reconciliation between the teachers and parents, he said that the enmity has intensified and the only panacea is to transfer the teachers.

He said that parents have already vilified teachers, portraying them as incompetent and the loss of confidence will pour onto students and lead to even poorer performance in future examinations.

The KUPPET boss asked parents to respect teachers and to recognize that they also play a part in ensuring that their children attain presentable exam results.

He also stressed that violence was a primitive way of solving problems and that parents should instead engage in peaceful consultations.

Nyakweba finally appealed to teachers to remain resilient and stick to their profession terming it as a noble calling.
