Parents in Nyamira County have been asked to take extra precautions to protect their school‑going children as heavy rains continue to pound the region, bringing with them floods, lightning strikes, and strong winds.
The warning comes from residents of Kitaru village, who say the ongoing downpours have exposed learners to multiple hazards, including swollen rivers and thunderstorms. Local officials have echoed the call, urging families to keep children indoors whenever possible to minimize risks.
Community leaders noted that the rains have already disrupted learning, with schools forced to close temporarily due to unsafe conditions. “We urge parents to be vigilant and ensure their children are safe,” one official said, stressing that vigilance is key to preventing tragedy.
Residents, led by Nyanumba Mamboleo and Erick Momanyi, have petitioned Nyamira County Commissioner Shufaa Mwajuma to convene an urgent disaster management committee. They argue that proactive measures are needed to address natural hazards before they escalate. Among their proposals is the preparation of emergency kits stocked with food, water, and first aid supplies for families affected by flooding.

Parents have also been advised to dress children warmly to guard against cold‑related illnesses such as pneumonia and dysentery. Safety tips shared with the community include avoiding shelter under trees during storms, steering clear of power lines, and refraining from crossing rivers immediately after heavy downpours.
Students have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors until weather conditions improve, and follow instructions from authorities and the meteorological department. Residents emphasized the importance of calmness and cooperation during emergencies, repeating slogans such as: “In case of an emergency, stay calm, call for help, and follow evacuation orders.”
Parents are now being asked to prioritize safety above all else, ensuring that children are shielded from the hazards of the rainy season.
