The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that multi-agency road safety inspections will be sustained in the days leading up to school reopening, cautioning motorists and public transport operators against disregarding traffic regulations during the busy back-to-school season.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the authority underscored that protecting children returning to school is a collective responsibility shared among drivers, transport operators, school administrators and parents. It noted that road risks typically rise after the long holiday break, making vigilance essential.

NTSA warned that failure to comply with traffic rules and vehicle safety standards exposes learners to avoidable dangers, particularly as traffic volumes surge nationwide. The authority urged road users to plan their journeys carefully, avoid night travel due to poor visibility, and ensure strict adherence to traffic laws.

Vehicle owners transporting children were reminded to keep their vehicles roadworthy, properly licensed and fully insured, with valid inspection certificates. Parents and guardians were also cautioned against allowing children to board vehicles that fail to meet compliance standards.

“To further protect our children, we strongly appeal to parents and guardians: do not permit your children to board any non-compliant vehicles,” read the statement

The Authority cited past checks that revealed serious defects in school transport vehicles, including faulty brakes, missing seat belts, unstable seating, malfunctioning door locks and speed limiters that were either defective or not transmitting data.

Motorists were encouraged to use the remaining days before reopening to present their vehicles for mandatory annual inspection, with NTSA confirming that all inspection centres are operational. Speed limiter vendors were further directed to ensure devices meet KS 2295:2018 standards, including proper speed limiting, data storage and real-time transmission to NTSA systems.

The authority assured the public that road safety checks will continue without interruption, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high standards and safeguarding children as they resume learning.
