NPA rallies parents to renovate their schools while they remain closed

NPA Chairman David Silas Obuhatsa making his speech during a national stakeholders conference on education funding on Oct 18, 2023 at KICD. He has asked parents to take an active part in renovating schools while they remain closed.

The National Parents Association (NPA) is rallying parents to help in renovation works in schools that have been affected by the ongoing heavy rains and floods, the indefinite closure of schools by President William Ruto yesterday aside.

NPA National Chairman David Silas Obuhatsa has said as much, calling on parents to come out in large numbers and help in preparing their schools and taking part in any renovation works to restore the damaged infrastructure.

“Let parents not forget that they are the government and there is no other they are sitting and waiting to come and prepare schools for their children. The situation in the country has overwhelmed the government and therefore, it’s the spirit of Harambee … parents must come out in large numbers, walk into schools and help to do such work like cleaning of classrooms and renovating toilets and other school property like furniture,” said Obuhatsa.

According to him, the postponement of school re-opening by President Ruto will give parents an opportunity to prepare in advance and also give the government time to carry out its assessment on the impact of the floods.

“NPA has welcomed the move by the president to postpone the reopening of schools till further notice considering the ongoing rains and floods in the country. It’s a big relief to parents, teachers and learners, especially in the affected parts of the country,” he said.

“The association understands well that this move will pave the way for the government to carry out proper impact assessment across all schools in the country and plan well in advance on what kind of approach to use come the new date of reopening,” he added.

The association has further warned parents against the ongoing floods, reminding them their responsibility to keep their children safe until schools are reopened.
