Lugari Constituency is witnessing an extraordinary academic revival, driven by innovative educational strategies under the leadership of area MP Nabii Nabwera.

Schools across the region are recording remarkable achievements, with the introduction of the creaming programme which plays a pivotal role in elevating academic performance and fostering a culture of excellence.

At the forefront of this transformation is Archbishop Njenga Girls’ High, which has seen its mean score rise from 6.2 in 2024 KCSE as compared to 6.7 in 2024.

The school celebrated eight A minus grades under its current administration, with graduates set to pursue prestigious fields such as Medicine and Engineering. The number of students joining universities from the school has also grown significantly, from 139 in 2023 to a projected 178 in 2024.

Elsewhere, PAG Mautuma Secondary broke a nearly decade-long dry spell by producing A minus grade, while St Paul’s Lugari High reported notable advancements in both academics and infrastructure.

Bishop Sulumeti Girls’ High experienced a surge in students who attained university entry mark, growing from 9 in KCSE 2023 to 21 last year, alongside improved sports performance.

Similarly, St Luke’s Lumakanda Boys’ High doubled its university transition double, reflecting a broader trend of excellence across the constituency.

Significant strides

Other schools have also made significant strides. Maturu Secondary in Lwandeti has improved its performance while Handow Secondary in Lugari increased its university transition from 9 in 2023 KCSE to 18 last year.

Holy Family Musembe Secondary achieved two A minus grades and boosted its mean score by 0.56, and Manyonyi Girls’ High recorded a 0.57 improvement while hosting beneficiaries of the Super 5G Scholarship programme.

The Salvation Army Mbajo Secondary registered the highest mean score improvement of 0.79, and Kivaywa Boys’ High elevated its mean score from 5.1 in 2023 to 5.8 in 2024, with 98 students securing direct entry to university.

Other schools contributing to Lugari’s academic rise include Makhukhuni Secondary, which improved its mean score from 2.7 in 2023 exams to 3.8 in 2024, and St Augustine’s Mlimani Secondary, which nearly doubled its university transition from 30 to 54. Savala Mixed Secondary also showed marked progress, increasing university transition to university from just 1 in 2023 to 9 in 2024 KCSE.

According to Nabwera, these successes are the transformative Creaming Programme, an initiative designed to boost academic performance by increasing the number of quality grades while reducing lower ones.

He says, “This programme has not only raised the number of As and Bs mean grades, enabling students to access competitive courses such as Medicine and Engineering, but has also enhanced performance in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.”

The initiative has doubled university transition in many schools, significantly reducing the prevalence of E and D- grades, and fostering a healthy spirit of competition among schools in the region.

As a result of these efforts, more than 900 students from Lugari are set to join higher education institutions this year, compared to fewer than 600 in previous year.
