A section of Migori County leaders have called on the government to “step back” from September reopening plans for higher learning institutions saying it is not safe for the learners to resume learning before the containment of Covid-19.

Senator Ochilo Mbongo Ayako said that he strongly believes that the government is not ready to reopen any learning institution citing that it will catalyse spread of the virus.

“We must understand that any living person has an opportunity to learn. Therefore, we should not risk lives of learners in the name of taking them back to school,” said Hon Ochilo.

He added that the nations’ health sector is already overwhelmed with the surging number of coronavirus patients hence reopening of schools is only possible if sector is fully prepared.

His sentiments were supported by Suna west Member of Parliament Hon Peter Masara who called on the government to pause the plans on the reopening of the higher learning institutions.

“The country is still recording large numbers of infections, a vivid picture that it is not the right time to reopen the learning institutions,” Said Masara.

Hon. Masara also urged parents to sensitize their children on the implications of indulging in sexual activities and substance abuse.

Senator Ochilo further urged parents and the society to join hands in addressing the spiking numbers of teenage pregnancies.

“The number of teenage pregnancies in the country could higher than the numbers circulating in media platforms because most families prefer to hide them due to customs,” said the legislator.
