Women leaders in the North Rift region have launched an ambitious campaign aimed at ending the persistent violation of girls’ rights.
Led by Neddy Kiptoo, they said that despite previous awareness efforts, teen marriages, teenage pregnancies, and Female Genital Mutilation continue unabated.
Speaking during a meeting in Iten, she emphasised that the campaign will engage churches and community groups in the fight against these harmful traditions.

Kiptoo described the practices as outdated and called for urgent, collective action to eradicate them.
“These practices are robbing our girls of their future. We must involve everyone—from families to religious institutions—to end this cycle of abuse,” said Kiptoo.
Her sentiments were echoed by Maria Losile, who called for the establishment of rescue centres at the sub-county level to provide safety and support for victims.
Losile also challenged men to take an active role in the campaign and urged local communities to abandon harmful cultural practices and embrace change.
“Change begins with us. Men must be allies in this fight. We cannot remain silent while our girls suffer,” she said.
The leaders also criticised local security agencies for laxity in dealing with offenders, particularly in remote areas where such practices are reportedly still standard, further calling for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and increased vigilance from authorities.
