Nomadic education forum formed to better academic standards

By John Majau

Stakeholders in the education sector from 13 out the 22 counties that are regarded as nomadic convened in Isiolo to unravel the causes of dismal performances by students from the regions and come up with sustainable solutions that will put them at per with the rest of Kenya.
Under the umbrella of the National Council for Nomadic Education in Kenya (NACONEK), the forum is also being used as a platform to analyse a research conducted over the last nine months by Prof Laban Ayiro.
The participants deliberated on ways of bridging the huge gap between the nomadic counties and the rest of Kenya in matters of school dropout rates, teacher pupil ratios, proximity of learning institutions to the learners and ultimately the performance in national examinations.
Chairperson of the NACONEK, Dr Chris Galgallo said that they were seeking to enhance education in the nomadic counties by improving access to education as well as retention, completion and transition.
The other sampled counties are Marsabit, Turkana, Isiolo, Wajir, Garissa, Samburu, West Pokot, Narok, Nairobi, Mombasa, Tana River and Kajiado.
Mombasa and Nairobi are classified under urban slums while the rest are considered pastoralist counties with Homa bay being classified as Fish nomads.
