Salama Secondary School in Makueni has achieved a fantastic turnaround by eradicating grade E from its 2024 KCSE results, an achievement that required immense effort.
Salama Secondary School principal Abdi Mohamed, who was transferred to the school last year, worked very hard with his capable team to remove all grades E from the school.
As a result, the school’s KCSE mean grade rose from 2.131 in 2023 to 3.2 last year. While 15 students scored grade E in 2023, not one received the lowest grade last year.
The school also recorded notable individual performances, with the top girl, Cecilia Mutheu Wambua, scoring a B+, while the top boy, Baqir Firouz, attained a C+.
“So last year, we had two students—a boy and a girl—transitioning to university. I am happy that we did not record any grade E and are completely doing away with it,” said Mohamed.

The institution has also seen major improvements in discipline, with past cases of defiance that disrupted operations now a thing of the past.
Mohamed acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Paul Kiamba, who laid the foundation for the school despite facing numerous challenges.
“We now have two streams in some classes. There are no more external conflicts, and I’m happy we are working together,” he said.
The principal credited the success to the support of parents, hardworking students, and cooperative teaching staff and board.
“Trust me, to eliminate these poor grades, we had to take extra classes. We motivated our students through gifts and prizes. We even allowed them to compete in terms of gender, which encouraged them a lot,” the principal said.
Due to the school’s stability, a friend referred them to a very competitive Safaricom’s Ndoto Zetu programme. They applied and luckily got picked, receiving 17 computers and 19 chairs.
Additionally, the school excels in extracurricular activities; in the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF), pupils have advanced to the county level.
Additionally, their music team has kept an outstanding record, making the county level three times in a row.
