The Ministry of Education has ordered a nationwide seven-day revision of Grade 10 school choices starting today, Tuesday, December 23, effectively cutting short Christmas plans for school heads, parents, Junior Secondary teachers, and candidates.

The exercise marks a decisive step in the rollout of Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Principal Secretary for Basic Education Prof. Julius Bitok said the revision will be conducted through the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) portal, with institutions required to urgently confirm infrastructure, staffing, ICT capacity, and subject combinations for Grade 10.

Parents and learners are expected to make informed choices within the tight timeline to ensure accurate pathway selections and compliant school placements.

“This is a crucial phase in ensuring that learners are placed in schools that meet the required standards for senior school,” Prof. Bitok said, adding that the ministry is committed to meeting the 2026 Grade 10 rollout deadline.

The directive places Junior Secondary ICT teachers on standby to support data entry and access, while school administrators race to meet compliance requirements on the portal.

The timing has stirred concern among education stakeholders who note that the Christmas period traditionally allows schools and families to rest after a demanding academic year. Even so, ministry officials maintain the exercise cannot be postponed without disrupting the national CBC transition calendar, emphasizing the need to keep momentum toward readiness benchmarks.

Parents are being urged to liaise with schools during the festive season to verify learner details and confirm subject pathways, as placement decisions hinge on both institutional capacity and accurate student selections.

The revision window closes on December 29, 2025, after which the ministry will analyze submissions to assess final Grade 10 placement readiness across the country.
