Learners sitting the inaugural Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) will not be issued with certificates once results are released, marking a significant departure from the long-standing Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) tradition.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the 1.1 million Grade 9 learners will instead receive result slips showing their performance in individual subjects without an overall grade. The cumulative scores will be shared exclusively with the Ministry of Education to guide placement into senior secondary schools.

The change is part of reforms under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, which emphasizes continuous assessment and skill acquisition over high-pressure exams.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the new approach values creativity, innovation, and problem-solving rather than ranking or elimination.

“KJSEA is about understanding what a learner can do with the knowledge they have acquired,” said Ogamba.

The KJSEA, which replaces KCPE, assesses learners in nine learning areas, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science, and Creative Arts and Social Studies.

The written assessments began on October 27, 2025, and are scheduled to conclude on October 29, 2025.
