Nivishe Foundation, a women-led and youth-led organization, has launched a mental health comic book targeting young people.
Amisa Rashid, Founder and Executive Director of Nivishe Foundation, said the book is the first mental health comic book in Africa.
Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, Amisa explained that the book provides details on mental health, breaking down the issues surrounding it to help young people understand the topic better.
The first chapter focuses on “understanding emotions,” with more episodes to be published monthly. Each episode will address different aspects of mental health.
“We want to break the stigma and have conversations on mental health. The first chapter is about understanding emotions, and we will release monthly episodes,” she said.

Nivishe is currently working with 1,000 youths and aims to reach half a million by 2025 to provide access to its services.
Amisa also runs a mental health fellowship held bi-annually, with 50 to 100 fellows. The fellows are required to return to their communities before graduation, identify a mental health issue, and work with a minimum of 200 people in the community.
She noted that much of the mental health intervention in Kenya comes from a Western perspective and that the country lacks community-based mental health approaches.
Nivishe offers dignified, accessible, affordable, and culturally sensitive mental health services at the community level.
Amisa has a strong background in counseling psychology and trauma healing and has successfully integrated technology and community-based approaches to provide accessible mental health services.
