Trans Nzoia County will soon have its first fully-fledged university after Nigeria’s Bells University of Technology confirmed plans to open a branch at the former Moi University Kitale Campus.
The announcement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year between the county government and the facility’s owners to expand higher education opportunities in the region.
County Secretary Truphosa Amere and the County Executive Committee Member for Education and Vocational Training welcomed the move, calling it a “game changer” that will boost both the education sector and the local economy.
Bells University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jeremiah Oludele Ojediran said the institution will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and master’s programmes in fields including Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Management.

Renovation of the campus is expected to begin soon, alongside community consultations and technical assessments. Officials say the university’s presence will also spur economic activity through increased demand for housing, hostels, shops, and services.
“This is not just about a building or classrooms,” Amere said. “It’s about giving hope to thousands of youths who deserve a shot at a brighter future without having to leave their county.”
